Saint-Tropez Beyond The Headlines

Saint-Tropez Beyond The Headlines

By Susie Hollands

Few destinations have managed to reinvent themselves quite as successfully as Saint-Tropez.

For many, the name immediately conjures images of superyachts, beach clubs and summer excess. Yet what continues to draw our clients back year after year is something far more enduring: a rare combination of glamour, authenticity and effortless Mediterranean living.

Despite its international reputation, Saint-Tropez remains surprisingly intimate. Mornings begin with fishermen unloading their catch in the harbour, locals gathering beneath the plane trees of Place des Lices, and a pace of life that feels distinctly Provençal. It is this contrast between global glamour and local tradition that gives the town its unique appeal.

The harbour remains one of the Riviera’s great stages, where classic sailing boats sit alongside some of the world’s most impressive yachts. Beyond the waterfront, narrow streets reveal hidden courtyards, independent galleries and elegant boutiques that have helped cement Saint-Tropez’s reputation as one of Europe’s most stylish summer destinations.

Where many destinations feel increasingly curated, Saint-Tropez still rewards wandering. A morning market, a quiet swim, an afternoon spent exploring the old town or simply watching the harbour come to life often becomes the highlight of a stay.

WHERE OUR CLIENTS ARE SPENDING THEIR TIME THIS SUMMER

One of the most noticeable shifts we have seen in recent years is that clients are no longer committing to a single beach club for the duration of their stay. Instead, they are creating a different experience each day.

Loulou Ramatuelle continues to be one of the most requested reservations of the season, attracting an international crowd drawn to its elegant atmosphere and beautiful setting. Nearby, La Réserve à la Plage remains a favourite among those seeking a more relaxed interpretation of Riviera luxury. For a livelier scene, Bagatelle and Verde Beach continue to attract a fashionable international clientele, while Shellona has firmly established itself as one of the Riviera’s most sought-after destinations, combining exceptional beachfront positioning with an increasingly influential music programme.

And then there is Club 55.

While Saint-Tropez continues to evolve, Club 55 remains one of the Riviera’s great institutions and, for many first-time visitors, an essential part of the experience. Its enduring appeal lies not in spectacle but in simplicity - a reminder of the Saint-Tropez that existed long before the arrival of the global jet set.

WHERE WE RECOMMEND STAYING

For clients seeking exceptional service and privacy, Cheval Blanc Saint-Tropez continues to set the benchmark, combining one of the finest waterfront locations on the Riviera with an atmosphere that feels both refined and relaxed.

Those looking for a more secluded retreat often favour La Réserve Ramatuelle, where sweeping sea views and outstanding wellness facilities create a welcome contrast to the energy of the town.

For classic Saint-Tropez glamour, Hôtel Byblos remains as iconic as ever, while MUSE offers a quieter, boutique alternative surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.

A DAY TRIP WORTH TAKING

One of our favourite recommendations remains the island of Porquerolles, easily reached from Saint-Tropez and offering an altogether different Riviera experience.

Spend the day cycling between secluded beaches, stopping for a leisurely rosé lunch at Domaine de l’Île before visiting the Fondation Carmignac, whose contemporary art installations are set within beautifully landscaped gardens. It is a reminder that some of the Côte d’Azur’s greatest luxuries remain space, nature and simplicity.

Saint-Tropez may be one of the Mediterranean’s most famous destinations, but its appeal has never been solely about glamour. Beneath the headlines and high season energy lies a place that continues to balance sophistication with authenticity — and that, perhaps more than anything else, explains why it remains one of our clients’ most enduring summer favourites.
